Sustainable solutions for body builders

Written by Swen Reiter | January 14, 2026

What happens after a trailer leaves the factory? How do companies ensure their products remain valuable for years to come? And how can sustainability be woven into every stage of the product lifecycle? These are the questions we set out to explore during our visit to German trailer and body builder Wielton GmbH.

In this article, we dive into Wielton’s innovative approach to installation and aftermarket services—areas that are increasingly important as customers demand longer-lasting products and environmentally friendly solutions. Our conversations revealed how Wielton not only provides durable trailers but also ensures they remain efficient and sustainable through innovative refurbishment processes and strategic system sales. From extending product life cycles to meeting strict sustainability demands, this is a story about thinking beyond the sale and focusing on long-term customer satisfaction.

As Wielton employee Eckhard Richter explained during our factory tour:

"Our trailers are really long-lasting. What is really needed? A little bit of paintwork, changing the floor, maybe a new tarpaulin—it's done. And then you have a trailer that is like brand new."

The creation of Wielton’s dedicated refurbishment department, Re-Trailer, allows customers to extend the lifespan of their trailers at a fraction of the cost of purchasing new ones. This focus on refurbishment is not only a cost-effective solution but also a sustainable one.

Addressing sustainability demands

Sustainability is at the forefront of Wielton’s operations. They use high-strength, lightweight steel (S700) and employ advanced rust prevention techniques like CTL coating. Such innovations ensure that Wielton’s products align with both customer expectations and governmental eco-regulations.

"Sustainability is really a focus topic for every customer. It’s not just a market trend—it’s a necessity backed by governmental support," Managing Director Holger Kauer emphasized during our discussion.

Wielton’s willingness to explore new materials and collaborate on sustainable solutions underscores their position as a forward-thinking industry player.

Extending product life cycles through refurbishment

The growing demand for refurbishment reflects the trust customers place in Wielton’s quality. The Re-Trailer department exemplifies this by offering services that make used trailers nearly indistinguishable from new ones.

"Refurbishment highlights the perfect quality of our products, but it also challenges us to convince customers when the time comes to buy new ones," says Kauer.

Wielton’s approach to refurbishment aligns with the needs of customers who invest in more environmentally friendly and higher-end trucks. By combining sustainability with practical cost-efficiency, Wielton offers solutions that support long-term value in the transport industry.

Looking ahead to the future of sustainable body building

As we concluded our visit, it was clear that Wielton’s future lies in its commitment to sustainability, customer-centric solutions, and innovative aftermarket services. Wielton’s holistic approach balances profitability with responsibility, ensuring they remain a driving force in the trailer industry.

Their story is one of ambition, adaptability, and a clear vision for the future—one that aligns perfectly with the evolving needs of the market. Our time at Wielton was not just a visit; it was an inspiring look into the future of sustainable transportation solutions.
