When it comes to road safety, underrun protection plays a crucial role in preventing accidents between large commercial vehicles and smaller road users. These protective barriers at the rear of trucks, help reduce the risk of cars, motorcycles, and even pedestrians sliding underneath in a collision.  
In this article, we will delve into a new type of Rear Underrun Protection Device (RUPD), the foldable and telescopic type. 

When is it suitable to use a telescopic underrun protection?  

Foldable and telescopic underrun protection is an adjustable RUPD to accommodate different swap body sizes. 

For example, a vehicle may switch between swap bodies C745 and C782. 

  • C745 = 7 450mm 
  • C782 = 7 820mm

If the vehicle uses a RUPD designed for C745, it won’t ensure the correct rear overhang (<300mm) for C782. Conversely, if installed for C782, it would protrude when C745 is used, risking a collision at the loading ramp.

What is UNECE regulation 58? 

The international organization United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) sets international vehicle safety standards. The UNECE regulation 58 (R58) applies specifically for underrun protection devices, ensuring effective barriers preventing underride collisions. 

The latest version, R58 revision 03, enforces stricter limits on longitudinal position, profile height, and ground clearance. 

Compliance with the UNECE R58 is mandatory in many regions, making proper selection essential for legal adherence and road safety. However, selecting the right underrun protection isn’t just about meeting regulations; it’s about saving lives, improving vehicle improve road safety and ensuring long-term cost efficiency. 

RUF R919 T is a high-quality R58.03 certified underrun protection for vehicles that use different swap body sizes, ensuring an overhang of less than 300mm.
